LOTF Response

Excerpt from Lord of the Flies that I will be analyzing:

[Piggy:] "I don't agree with all Jack said, but with some.  'Course there isn't a beast in the forest.  How could there be?  What would a beast eat?"
"Pig."
"We eat pig."
"Piggy!"
"I got the conch!" said Piggy indignantly.  "Ralph--they ought to shut up, oughtn't they?  You shut up, you littluns!  What I mean is that I don't agree about this here fear.  Of course there isn't nothing to be afraid of in the forest.  Why--I been there myself!  You'll be talking about ghosts and such things next.  We know what goes on and if there's something wrong, there's someone to put it right."
He took off his glasses and blinked at them.  The sun had gone as if the light had been turned off. [...]
"Life," said Piggy expansively, "is scientific, that's what it is.  In a year or two when the war's over they'll be traveling to Mars and back.  I know there isn't no beast--not with claws and all that, I mean--but I know there isn't no fear either."
Piggy paused.
"Unless--"
Ralph moved restlessly.
"Unless what?"
"Unless we get frightened of people." (83-84)

Analysis:

Piggy begins to talk about the beast asks what he would eat, and someone says pigs. Although, the kids eat pigs. This goes along with Simon's idea of the beast which is that it is inside of the boys. Also, the conch is mentioned in this excerpt. The conch represents power and order. Whoever is holding the conch, can speak, and whoever is not holding the conch should listen. This will later become a massive problem because Jack and his group will start to not listen to the conch and forget about its meaning. This is significant because many consequences will come out of not listening to the conch like Piggy's death, Simon's death, and the separation of Jack and Ralph's groups.

As represented here, Piggy is very book smart, not street smart. Piggy mentions fear too. There is a lot of fear. Fear causes people to do stupid things like the boys killing Simon because they thought he was the beast. Piggy thinks the beast is fear which all of the boys have. There are some significant word choices like "Ralph moved restlessly." This represents that he's nervous about what Piggy has to say because he knows he's right. When Piggy talks about what will happen after the war, he's saying that the technology will increase therefore they will become rescued. This entire passage connects to the overall trend of fear.
